Yes! This is the typical way of starting a story, one of those fairy tales we are told when we are children and naive. Most of them are great and we do believe they are true. However, when we grow up we discover these fantastic stories do not happen as often as we'd like to.
Ten years ago something really shocking happened to me... I was just 28 and at that time I was flooded by the idea of becoming a mother. A MOTHER!! A real one!! What the hell was going on? I did not mean to be a mother so soon... but a test told me I was going to be a mother in about 10 months.
The first month was a kind of nightmare given that I gave up smoking, coffee, beers and ham. At the same time my body started changing (boobs like excruciating balloons, dramatic changes of humour and a terrible feeling of guilt because I hadn't realized before about my pregnancy)
Anyway... When that first month came to an end it was the time to start looking for information about being good parents. Imagine! books, magazines, articles, interviews to parents and (what's even worse) GRANDPARENTS... Everything should be perfect for the great moment of bringing a child into the world. And not 'a child' ... our FIRST child!
On 11th October Darío landed smoothly after almost 18 hours of piercing pain and horror in a narrow hospital room. My very first baby looked at me in that hospital and from that moment I actually fell in love!!
Nowadays I am a mother of two children: Darío and Daniela (she landed just twenty months later in another blue and bigger room of the same hospital but in a completely different and better way - fortunately-). I'm still married 😊 and we live in the same house and have two dogs (Estrella and Balto). I am a teacher and in general I learn more things than I usually teach, at least this is what I try to do day in day out.
When you are a parent you always want to do the right things at the right time but it is not always like this. Sometimes the answers you look for are not in any book or article and nobody tells you the solutions you want to listen to.Every day is a challenge for you as a parent and your children are the best creatures in the world to demonstrate you that you are not doing the things you meant to do when you listened to those fucking fairy tales as a child. Even when you are having a really great time with them, reality is much more INTENSE.
This evening Daniela and I attended a kind of cinema talk. My bare intention there was to have a good time and show her other type of reality - to widen her mind. She is just 8 and while driving home I asked her about her opinion....
- Dani, did you like the film? Did you understand? Have you got any doubt or question?
- Yes, mum. I liked the film.
- So...
- So? Do you have any question, mum?
- mmmmm... yes! Can you explain?
- (looking at me). These kids that appear in the film were born with a wrong body. But I do not understand why people talk about it.
- Darling, it is important for them. They want to be accepted and...
- Of course, mum! But that's the problem. Why the hell people don't respect that? They are PEOPLE, HUMAN BEINGS... This is the most important thing here! Who cares about penis or vagina?
- They CARE given that they were born with a wrong body, Dani.
(silence)
- Daniela: Fortunately, most of them have cool parents who respect them. That's really important.
Yes... children are naive but incredibly GREAT!!! Even when we want to teach them things... they keep on being such magnificent teachers!!
Here it is the moral of the day:
" Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young" (Henry Ford)
Anyone who stops
learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning
stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.
